The city witnessed two grand religious processions on Sunday morning. While Jains took out a procession to celebrate the golden jubilee of a family taking diksha, devotees of Lord Jagannath took out the Jal yatra, getting the Lord ready for the Rath Yatra.

Jal yatra

As part of preparation for the 136th Jagannath Rath Yatra to be held on July 10, a jal yatra was taken out in the city. It began at 8 am from Jagannath temple at Jamalpur and culminated at Bhudar no Aaro at Sabarmati riverfront near Jamalpur bridge.

A total of 115 elephants and hundreds of devotees carrying 108 kalash (copper pots) with Ganga water were the main attraction of the procession.

Rituals were carried out and the kalash were filled at the river banks with water from Sabarmati. The holy water was used for Lord’s maha-abhishek. He was then decorated in ‘Gaj-vesh’ (in the form of Lord Ganpati) and kept for darshan.

It is believed that after the holy bath Lord and his elder brother Balram visit their maternal uncle (Lord Ranchodji), whose temple is situated in Saraspur. In keeping with tradition, idols of Lord Balram and Jagannath were sent to Saraspur temple and hence darshan of Lord Jagannath will not be possible till July 8.
