Announcing plans for the upcoming Gujarat assembly polls, national general secretary of Janata Dal-United (JD-U), Chandraraj Singhvi, said that his party has decided to contest around 33 seats from the tribal belt in Gujarat.
Without sharing any specific details, he added that top JD-U leaders including Bihar CM Nitish Kumar might also campaign in the state.
According to Singhvi, though JD-U has contested polls with BJP in a few other states, joining hands with the saffron party is ‘out of question’ for the Gujarat polls. Singhvi also said that the party currently aims to contest 33 seats in Gujarat, but the number could rise to 60 seats if it finds good candidates.
JD-U members are yet to identify issues to highlight during campaigning. “We kept dalits and tribals in mind and chose to field candidates from the tribal belt,” he said, adding that his party is also planning to put up candidates in Kutch- Bhuj.
“A place like Banaskantha is yet to derive any benefits of development in Gujarat. There are areas where public health centres are not available. We also want to check the condition of primary schools and education in poor areas,” Singhvi said.
