A mother gives birth to a child, but a teacher gives life to children, opined chief minister Narendra Modi, while addressing academicians and students at an event — Indian Institute of Teachers’ Education: Vision and Values — at Mahatma Mandir on Tuesday.

Praising a few initiatives of the education and primary education department, he said that it is time to bring back dignity of teachers, just like older times.  The chief minister drew a realistic picture of the current education system by referring to a few problems.

“Earlier, if any student opted for tuition classes, they hid their books. These days, it is matter of pride. There was a time, when picnic spots were decided keeping students’ choice in mind. Now, a teacher decides to take students for a picnic to a place his/her family has not seen,” Modi said. The chief minister also said that time had come for some introspection in current education practices. He also emphasized on improving communication skills of teachers.

Spiritual guru Ramesh Oza, University Grants Commission vice-chairman H Devraj, former vice-chancellors of universities in Gujarat, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu were present at the event.

Cabinet minister of education Bhupendrasinh Chudasama, minister of state Vasu Trivedi were also present there.
