Incessant rains lash Ahmedabad, bring traffic to standstill

The rain god has finally responded to prayers of the citizens on Wednesday as the city recorded 64 mm rainfall between 7 and 9 pm. Following a few days of light showers, the heavy rains finally lashed the city on Wednesday evening inundating roads and low-lying areas. This led to traffic snarls in several parts of the city.

South Zone which received saw 69 mm of rainfall recorded the highest rainfall in the city, while area-wise it's Gota, with 11mm of rainfall. The city has in all received 257mm of rainfall so far.

"It was drizzling the whole day. I decided to go out on a drive with my friends. But that proved to be a bad decision. We were caught in heavy rains and traffic snarls," said Anokhi Shukla, a resident of Satellite. "I was stuck in a traffic jam for hours. It took me more than an hour of my usual time to reach home," said Shivani Bhatt, a professional caught up in the rain.

The meteorological department has meanwhile predicted heavy to very heavy rains in the city and district in the coming days. The city on Wednesday recorded a maximum temperature of 28.6°C while the minimum temperature was 24.7°C.

Meanwhile, seven incidents of trees reported in the city along with four instances waterlogging. The heavy rains also resulted in the authorities opening six gates of the Vasna Barrage and 14975 cusec water is expected to be released. Low lying areas in the city has also been put on alert. Several trains from Ahmedabad via Vadodara has also been cancelled due to heavy rains.

State Report

Widespread rain was witnessed in all 101 talukas of the state. Central Gujarat recorded the highest rainfall.

Vadodara received 18 inches of rainfall in a span of 12 hours.

A high alert has been issued for two dams in South Gujarat — one each on Tapi and Navsari — while five others have been put on alert or a warning has been issued.

The state has so far received over 40% of its annual average rainfall (816 mm of rainfall). South Gujarat has received the highest rainfall so far accounting for 55% of its annual average rainfall of 1418mm.
