Ahead of dedication of Statue of Unity, leader of opposition Paresh Dhanani on Tuesday asked prime minister Narendra Modi to take steps to provide relief to farmers.

"The state government has failed to take water of Sardar Sarovar dam to villages. Looking at irregular rainfall, affected areas in Saurashtra, Kutch and north Gujarat must be declared scarcity affected. The government must also make announcement for immediate payment of crop insurance to farmers," Dhanani said.

The Congress leader reminded PM that Sardar Patel was also a farmer, and demanded waiver of farmers' loans. Dhanani sought measures to ensure adequate supply of subsidised fodder in the scarcity affected places.

The MLA from Amreli also asked the PM that people of Gujarat wanted to know when Sardar Sarovar project was going to be declared a national project.

In a letter to CM Vijay Rupani on Monday, Dhanani had targeted the govt over its failure to complete construction of Narmada canal network.

In another development, Patidar quota leader Hardik Patel announced that a gathering of farmers would be held in Junagadh for various demands, including farm loan waiver, and to pay tributes to Sardar Patel on his birth anniversary. Former union minister Yashwant Sinha and BJP MP Shatrughan Sinha would join the 'Khedut Satyagrah' along with thousands of farmers at Vanthali town, he added.
