Taking serious note of the present education system that focusses only on grades, a professor of Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad has written a book featuring schools that educate differently despite budgetary constraints. Professor Rajeev Sharma, presently a faculty member at the Ravi J Matthai Centre for Educational innovation at IIMA, in his book 'Not Just Grades: Schools That Educate Differently' has attempted to look beyond the famous 'rote learning' and 'rat race' tactics that schools knowingly or unknowingly are involved into. The book presents cases studies of ten schools across the country that focus on learning and giving more autonomy to teachers to implement creativity in teaching.

Speaking about the same, Sharma said, "In the past 15-20 years of my work in education sector, education has become extremely mechanical and competitive and is oriented towards grades and marks. Hence learning does not happen and due to this, students have been facing lot of stress."

The case studies also highlight that providing healthy and holistic learning does not require huge resources.

Sharma has derived the case studies from his management development programmes related to colleges and other institutions of higher education. Interestingly, the book also features two schools from Gujarat.

He says, "The Chanderbala Modi Academy, in Ankleshwar which was established in 1992 with the support of an industrial group, tries to inculcate an inclusive outlook among its children through co-curricular activities. For example, by organizing a swim across the Narmada river to draw attention to drug abuse, padayatras against child labour, and similar activities. Whereas, the Swaminarayan Gurukul Hariyala, in Kheda admits children who do not fit in elsewhere. Being a faith-inspired school, its curriculum includes lectures on scriptures. Especially, since its management includes members of the Swaminarayan sect, parents of children who are addicted to bad habits like tobacco chewing, drugs, smoking, etc prefer this school as it helps their children get on the right track."
