Premier B-school was placed 18th in the Financial Times - Masters in Management – 2013 global rankings
Good news first. The Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA) flagship course Post Graduate Program in Management (PGP) has figured in the list of top 20 institutes across the globe in the Financial Times’- Masters in Management – 2013 ranking.
The not–so-good one: IIMA’s 18th position shows that the course has slipped down eight rungs in 2013.
Last year, its PGP was placed at the 10th position in the same ranking. Good news is that its sister institute IIM, Calcutta at 19th rank also pipped other institutes to figure in top 20 list.
A closer look at the PGP’s performance in the FT ranking would reveal that this is third year consecutively where its ranking has tumbled. In 2011, IIMA’s PGP was ranked at the 7th position in almost among the 70 courses that the ranking process includes.
Last three years’ average rank for IIMA’s PGP course comes to 12 in the FT ranking. Some of the criteria measured to rank premier institutes include weighted salary (three years average salary after graduation- figures adjusted for salary variations between industry sectors), value for money rank (calculated using alumni salaries three years after graduation and course costs and length of course) and employment (the percentage of the most recent graduating class that were in employment three months after graduation).
According to the details on the FT’s Master in Management rank-weighted salary is at US$ 94,313, value of employment is 69, while employment is 100%.
If compared to last years’ ranking score, the IIMA has seen downward score which impacted negatively on the flagships’ ranking, it is believed. IIMA director of the institute Prof Ashish Nanda was out of town and could not be reached for his comments.
Some of the other criteria included women faculty, women students, women board, international faculty, international students and international board, international mobility rank, international experience rank to mention a few.
The FT report ranks top 70 programmes in general management that do not require students to have prior work experience for admission to the masters program. Till last year, IIMA was only business school to feature in the ranking. From this year, IIM-C has also been included in the ranking process.
