A day after the Maharashtra State Backward Class Commission paved the way for reservation for the Maratha community in the state, the demand for quota for Patidars in Gujarat is back in focus. Patidar reservation stir leader Hardik Patel asked the Vijay Rupani-led Gujarat government on Friday to extend reservation benefits to the Patidar community on the same lines.

"If reservation is not possible Constitutionally in Gujarat, how is it possible in Maharashtra?" questioned Hardik, who has been spearheading the movement for over three years.

The 25-year-old asked the Gujarat government to order a survey of Patidars to assess their backwardness, as was done with the Marathas, and to extend reservation in higher education and government jobs to the community. He also pointed out that the BJP is in power in both Maharashtra as well as Gujarat.
