Gujarat records 25% surplus rainfall

Bharuch, Chhota Udepur recorded excess rainfall of 73% each, whereas Botad, Surendranagar recorded excess rainfall of 65 and 64% respectively

The state has recorded 25 per cent surplus rainfall than its long-term average of 506.1 mm for the period between June 1 and August 17. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) data, the cumulative rainfall in Gujarat during this monsoon stands at 630.3 mm.

The districts of Bharuch and Chhota Udepur have recorded surplus rainfall of 73 per cent each, whereas Botad and Surendranagar have recorded surplus rainfall of 65 and 64 per cent, respectively. 

There are 17 districts in the state which have recorded a surplus rainfall of over 20 per cent. 

The other districts that contributed in the surplus rainfall in percent wise are Bhavnagar (21), Jamnagar (26), Kutch (44), Morbi (33), Anand (28), Dangs (42), Narmada (51), Panchmahals (35), Surat (37), Tapi (30), Vadodara (22), and Valsad (42).

As far as rainfall shortage is concerned, the highest rainfall shortage of 32 per cent was registered in Porbandar, followed by Mahisagar 12 per cent, and Gir Somnath 11 percent. The shortage of rainfall in Ahmedabad district currently stands at 5 per cent, whereas it is around 8 per cent in Gandhinagar.

While majority of the state was reeling under a considerable shortage of rainfall till mid-July, the shortfall started reducing owning to heavy to very heavy rainfall registered across the state since the third week of July. Also, the widespread heavy rainfall ensured that the water level of dams in the rain parched state increase rapidly.

This year, the onset of monsoon was delayed by around 15 days. While the normal date for onset of monsoon in the state is June 10, it actually entered the state on June 25.
