As per the data shared by the Admissions Committee for Professional Courses (ACPC), as against 5104 seats, a total of nearly 20000 PINs has been issued to the students of which 17000 registrations were made. The numbers, as the experts say, seems to be promising as against other courses, where the seats are likely to go vacant, especially engineering. The PIN allows students to participate in the online admission process.

Speaking about the same, member secretary of ACPC, GP Vadodaria said, "This year, due to dip in Class 12 results, engineering seats will majorly remain vacant. We are surprised to see numbers for pharmacy and it will ensure that good quality students will be enrolled as competition will be more. The job opportunities seem to be growing in pharmacy sector."

30 per cent engineering colleges will find difficult to survive: GTU VC

"Since two years, pharmacy has seen massive interest from students. Gujarat is a pharmaceutical hub and the placements are 100%. More students are opting for Group B in class 12 Science and if they are not interested in medical, they either opt for nursing, pharmacy or physiotherapy. In placements fairs, for 1000 posts offered by 65 companies, candidates are less. Hence, this ensures good placements too. The biggest concern this year is engineering. Nearly 30% self-financed colleges which do not have enough faculty strength or facilities will face difficulty in surviving as they will have less than 30% of strength in a class", said Navin Sheth, Vice-Chancellor, Gujarat Technological University.

Since last year, LM College of Pharmacy started a six-year programme on doctor of pharmacy as the USA and other nations consider a five-year course in pharmacy.

Speaking to DNA, M T Chhabria, Principal, LM College of Pharmacy had said, "The opportunities have suddenly grown in this sector. Moreover, the regulatory bodies have brought stricter norms making pharmacists mandatory. Research opportunities have opened up for students. These are the reasons for increase in students interest in pharmacy."

Last year, only 41848 students had figured in the final merit list in engineering for 68323 seats.
