Gujarat: Heavy rains fill dams, overall storage increases to 65%

Heavy showers over the past fortnight in the state have improved the water storage in state dams, said the data of Narmada, Water Resources, Water Supply and Kalpasar Department. Around 204 dams across state have a combined storage of 16,396.08 million cubic metres (mcm) of water, which is about 65 % of the total storage capacity, against the storage capacity of 25,224.16 mcm.Sardar Sarovar and Narmada dams are considered to the lifeline of the state had a level of 130.99 metres. Sarovar dam has 7,149.37 mcm of water, which is 75.57% of its capacity against its capacity to store 9,460 mcm of water, It is receiving 4.3 lakh cusecs of water and close to 3.93 lakh cusecs of water was overflowing from the dam.Similarly, Ukai dam, the lifeline for south Gujarat is filled up to 333.76 feet against a full reservoir level of 345.01 feet. It is receiving an inflow of about 5.08 lakh cusec of water, while the outflow is about 1.85 lakh cusec of water.According to a press statement by the state government, 17 dams have been filled up to 100% of their capacity, while another 42 dams have been filled up to 70% of their capacity. Chief Minister expressed happiness about the storage of water in the dams. "Last year, even after the end of the Monsoon only 56% of total storage capacity was utilized. While this year it is much higher," said Rupani.
