From Tuesday, the ladies compartments in trains running between Ahmedabad and Mumbai at night are being escorted by mahila decoy teams of Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP).
More than 20 teams have been officially deployed for the job, in which an officer in uniform will also be present. They will escort women passengers safely to their destination.
"We have made a list of 15 trains connecting Ahmedabad and Mumbai, which runs during the night and are frequented by women passengers. Decoy teams and officers in uniform will be deployed inside the Mahila coach of these trains. In future, we are planning to deploy a team in every train of Ahmedabad division," said Gautam Parmar, Deputy Inspector-General of Railways.
The decision comes after a teacher of Valsad travelling in the Mahila coach of the Gujarat Queen was molested by an unidentified man on August 15.
As per officials, the incident took place when the victim was returning from Vadodara after tying rakhi to her brother. When the train crossed Navsari Railway station, a man entered the coach and spotted her sitting alone.
Taking advantage of the fact that she was the only passenger in the compartment apart from him, the man tried to grab her. Somehow, the victim managed to escape from his grip and ran towards the general compartment seeking help. Meanwhile, the accused managed to escape. Later the victim lodged a complaint with the Valsad GRP police station against the accused.
"We are investigating the matter. Two teams have been formed to nab down the accused. We have made a sketch of the accused and are trying to identify him," said Parmar.
Regarding the matter a meeting was held on Monday between senior officials of RPF and GRP where they discussed measures to ensure safety of the women passengers who travel during the night. The decision to deploy decoy teams in 15 overnight trains was made at the meeting.
