The state government has decided to increase the Dearness Allowance (DA) by 3% to be paid to its over nine lakh employees. This includes retired employees who are drawing pension from the state government.

The decision is likely to benefit 9,61,638 employees including pensioners and those working in the panchayats. The largesse is likely to put an additional burden of Rs 1,071 crore on the state exchequer. The rise is part of the 7th pay commission recommendations.

Earlier in the day , deputy chief minister Nitin Patel said that the employees both current and retired will be given an increase of 3% in their Dearness Allowance with effect from January 1, 2019. Patel, who was addressing a press conference, said that the arrears for the hike in DA will be paid in the month of July.

It should be noted that the state government employees were at present earning a DA of 9% which will now be increased to 12% after the announcement. Of the over 9 lakh employees and pensioners over 2 lakh are in the panchayats alone while over 4 lakh are pensioners.

"The hike in DA will also benefit employees of grant-in-aid institutions and is in line with the recommendations of the 7th pay commission," said Patel.

It should be noted that the Central government had on January 1, 2018 increased the DA for its employees to 2%.

Later in January 2019, it had announced a 3% hike in the DA of its employees and pensioners. This announcement had come a few months before the announcement of Lok Sabha polls. The hike was to be replicated by various state governments for its employees too.
