Schools with less than 10 per cent results nearly double from 26 o 49
Even as the overall pass percentage in Gujarat board's class 12 science results declined marginally this year, the situation seems quite worrisome as there has also been a drop in the number of schools recording 100 per cent results. As against 42 schools that recorded 100 per cent results in 2018, the number has fallen to 35 this year. Not just this, schools with less than 10 per cent results have nearly doubled, from 26 schools in 2018 to 49 this year.
The results were announced by the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) on Thursday morning with 71.90 per cent pass percentage. In terms of medium, English medium schools recorded the highest pass percentage at 75.13 per cent followed by Urdu medium ones at 71.43 per cent, Gujarati mediums at 71.09 per cent, Hindi mediums at 65.13 per cent and Marathi mediums at 58.57 per cent. A total of 22 students of Gujarati medium schools scored between 21-32 marks out of 100. However, a total of 183 students scoring Grade A among different mediums belonged to Gujarati medium schools, highest among all mediums as against only 67 students scoring Grade A from English medium ones.
For Alifiya Saiyed, who scored 74 per cent, reaching this level was extremely difficult as her mother never wanted her to study. Her mother Shabana said, "I am not against studies, I have studied till class 8. But I feel that studying until class 10 is enough. However, her father was very adamant about her studies despite financial struggle." Anisha Shaikh, principal, FD Higher School for Girls in Jamalpur said, "Her parents wanted her to discontinue studies after class 9-10. When we learnt about this, we counselled them to let her continue with her education."
