Gujarat: Devotees pledge not to immerse idols in rivers

In order to cater to the rush, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporations has created 61 artificial ponds for immersion.

Devotees in the city took a pledge on Monday, that they will not pollute the Sabarmati river while immersing idols Gods during different festivals. With final immersion of Ganesh visarjan falling on Thursday, authorities expect huge inflow at immersion sites. In order to cater to the rush, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporations has created 61 artificial ponds for immersion.

According to sources in AMC, a meeting of voluntary organisations carrying out idol immersion was held at AMC headquarters on Monday. Interacting with the leaders of organisations, Mayor Bijal Patel and Municipal Commissioner Vijay Nehra urged to stay away from immersing idols in the river.

"The meeting had only one point agenda. We are on a drive to ensure that Sabarmati river remains clean. We sought their cooperation and asked them to immerse idols in specialized ponds," Patel told DNA. Mayur Raval, a member of Ganeshotsav Samiti wrote a pledge that, "I will always immerse idols in specialized ponds. I will never immerse idols in Sabarmati river. I will also educate other citizens not to immerse idols in the river. I will always try to ensue that Sabarmati river is clean and free of pollutants."

Patel said in order to ensure that no one immerses idols in the river, AMC has arranged for 61 artificial ponds this year compared to 20 ponds last year. "We have made ponds in each of the seven zones so that devotees do not have to travel to longer distance. We also have ponds along the Sabarmati riverfront, so devotees have many options now," said Patel.

During the initial days of the festivities, devotees were seen immersing idols in the river as the ponds were not built till then. In addition to ponds, arrangements are also made for cranes to lift the idols and immerse them. According to estimates, there are close to 500 pandals have come up in the city on the occasion of Ganeshotsav. In addition to these, residents bring Ganesh idols to their homes and then get them immersed.
