A city sessions court on Friday provided conditional bail to 21 persons including five women who were accused of attacking migrants livings in the Sabarmati area. The bail was granted with a remark that the circumstances against the accused persons are not so strong.

The court clarified that the circumstances against the accused persons are not strong enough to reject their bail applications, but the attacks on migrants had serious repercussions in the society throughout the country. It added that it needs to be seen that there should not be any negative impact on society and therefore, the accused should be prohibited from entering the area under the jurisdiction of the Sabarmati police station.

The court also imposed a number of conditions on the accused who were granted bail to ensure that they do not create any further trouble. It prohibited them from entering the jurisdiction area of the Sabarmati Riverfront (West) police station, except twice a month when they are supposed to mark their presence in the police station.

The court also asked them to furnish a bail bond of Rs 15,000.

Notably, 22 persons were arrested for the attack on migrants on October 5 and while 21 of them applied for bail, one of those arrested withdrew his bail plea. The counsel for the state government vehemently opposed the bail pleas.

The government contended that under the guise of taking vengeance of the incident of rape of a 14-month-old in Sabarkantha district, the accused attacked the migrants with an intent to expel them from the state.

The council also contended that the attack on migrants has received grave reactions from across the country.
