To protest the heavy burden of fines that the BJP government at the Centre and the state plan to impose on the citizens, leader of Opposition Paresh Dhanani on Sunday took to a series of tweets in which he posted pics of himself driving a cart pulled by buffaloes.

He urged the citizens to give up vehicles and switch to bullock carts to escape the exorbitant fines that will be effective from Monday onwards.

Dhanani said that the Congress party also planned to protest against the unreasonably high fines being imposed on citizens without the government providing corresponding facilities to them.

"The government is justifying the high fines in the name of safety. But before putting the people under financial burden it is the government 's duty to introspect whether it has provided the necessary infrastructure including public transport, good roads etc to ensure people can travel safely," said Dhanani.

He said that to begin with the government should look at its own vehicles and ensure that they follow the rules and norms. "Before imposing fines on people the government should bring in rules to impose hefty fines on contractors for poor quality of roads. Good quality roads will go a long way in improving road safety ," he said.

He also demanded an end to the misuse of public transport and better connectivity through public transport.

"Controlling speed limits in the city, addressing the parking issues and concentrating on encouraging green vehicles is what the government should be doing at a war footing," he added.

Gujarat is all set to implement the amended traffic rules and fines under the Motor Vehicles Act 2019 from September 16 onwards.
