Gujarat clocks over 100% of average annual rains

With almost one more month for the monsoon to end, Gujarat has already clocked over 100% of its annual average rainfall. The state has so far recorded 104% of its annual average rainfall of 816mm. It has till Thursday received 840mm of rainfall. The met department has meanwhile warned of heavy to very heavy rains in the state, particularly in South Gujarat in the coming days. The heavy rains are likely to lash Navsari, Valsad, Chhota Udepur among others. Fishermen have also been warned not to venture into the sea.

Private weather forecaster Skymet said that a low-pressure area formed over the Bay of Bengal was expected to move in a westerly direction bringing rains to Gujarat particularly South Gujarat. It said several other regions of the state is likely to get rains up to September 7. It also said that a cyclonic circulation was developing over Gujarat region resulting in one or two heavy spells. It added that Saurashtra and Kutch would receive scattered rains for another 48 hours while the intensity would be severe in Surat, Valsad, Navsari, Baruch, Bhavnagar, Amreli.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, intermittent but heavy rains lashed both city and state with Talala in Gir Somnath district recording 149 mm of rainfall in 10 hours. Overall 109 talukas of the state received rains on Thursday. The Sardar Sarovar dam is now filled upto 89% of its holding capacity, taking the overall water level to 135.6 mts. Overall, except for North Gujarat, the dams in all other regions of the state has on an average recorded water level above 50% with those in Central Gujarat recording over 95% of water levels.
