The Gujarat assembly on Monday condemned the terror attack in Pulwama on February 14 and paid homage to the 40 CRPF jawans who were martyred in the incident. Members of the BJP and Congress, however, did not miss this chance to make political observations, attacking each other on the issue.

Members sought strict action against Pakistan and the terrorist activities sponsored by the neighbouring country. The budget session of Gujarat assembly began on Monday and the incident echoed throughout the proceedings on the first day.

"This House, in one voice, condemns the terror attack on our jawans. All the political parties have come together to fight terrorism. Every citizen of this country is with our soldiers. People want a fight-to-finish to wipe out terrorists completely," Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said.

Leader of Opposition Paresh Dhanani said while people extended unconditional support to the Centre to fight terrorism, several attacks had taken place on the armed forces in Kashmir in the last couple of years.

"There are many other means to acquire power. But when someone tries to break our unity, we all must resolve to give a befitting reply to such elements. Mere talks will not serve any purpose. We have to take decisive steps to eliminate terrorism," Dhanani said.

Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel, making a political observation, indicated to the incident of then PM Jawaharlal Nehru taking up the issue in United Nations in 1948 and Sardar Patel's dismay over imposition of article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir.

Patel said, "We would not have to witness this kind of unfortunate incident, if Sardar Patel was given the responsibility to handle the Kashmir issue. He merged all the erstwhile princely states into the Union of India and had convinced the Maharaja of Kashmir too. But the issue of Kashmir was handled separately by several leaders and the same has been remained burning since then."

Countering the Dy CM's comments, MLA from Anklav and Gujarat Congress chief, Amit Chavda, said, "The Congress is the worst-affected party in India by terrorism. We lost two of our prime ministers, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, because of terrorism. But they had taken strict actions against terror activities during their terms. Only words such as 'Dil me aag hai' and 'Aarpar ki ladai' do not serve the purpose because people of India now want action after putting trust in you and giving you power."
