Gujarat Assembly passes bill to keep shops open 24x7

The amendment was made in the Gujarat Shops and Establishment Act.

Shops and commercial establishments in Gujarat could be kept open round the clock. The Assembly on Friday passed a bill permitting shops to remain open round the clock. The amendment was made in the Gujarat Shops and Establishment Act. It now states that commercial units in Gujarat would not need to take prior nod from any authority to operate at night.

The Opposition, however, opposed the bill citing law and order problem. The government countered their argument saying the Bill had also a provision of regular inspection through web based application by concerned authorities.

The Bill also gave freedom to commercial unit from annual renewal of registration or permit from authorities but registration done before opening would be for lifetime. There are other clauses in the bill like raising creche facility in the unit having 30 or more women employees, canteen and double pay to employees for overtime.

The units in municipal areas can remain open till 2 am and 11 pm in rural areas. Minister for labour and employment Dilip Thakor said, "Earlier, commercial units were supposed to keep one day off in a week but this constraint has been removed via this amendment.

The units can assign duty to women employees between 6 and 9 pm. This would give push to employment generation in state besides giving freedom to people to purchase stuff at their own convenience."

Another Bill was passed with an amendment in Gujarat Agricultural Land Ceiling Act, which now gives liberty to NGOs working for cow conservation to possess more land.

The Bill for redevelopment of old housing schemes under Gujarat Housing Board was also passed unanimously. It allows houses above 25 years or older to undergo redevelopment with sanction of 75% of house holders. The House also passed a Bill allowing civic authorities to recruit deputy municipal commissioner and assistant municipal commissioner level officials on heir own.

Shopping Bill
