The elopement was a drama in itself. On May 28, 17-year-old Mona Shah (name changed) had blindfolded her fiancé, taken away his phone to prevent him from contacting her family and then vanished with her lover, Tushar. Her fiancé then lodgd a complaint lodged at Navrangpura police station.

The couple returned on Monday and produced their marriage certificate before Navrangpura police. The couple told the police that they had a registered marriage in Ambaji. All was hunky dory till then.

However, the twist in the tale came when the cops pointed out that Mona, who turned 18 on June 1, was a minor when she eloped. This made it a case of abduction.

The cops thus arrested Tushar. The arrest was made based on the complaint by Mona’s father against Tushar for kidnapping his minor daughter.

“Both of them were adults when they got married in the first week of June. However, Mona was a minor when they had eloped. She vanished four days before her 18th birthday. So, technically, she was a minor. We have handed Mona’s custody to her parents and arrested Tushar on kidnapping charges,” said a Navrangpura police official.

Investigation revealed that Mona, a resident of Dehgam in Gandhinagar, fell in love with Tushar, who is from another caste. He owns a mobile shop in the same city. When Mona’s family found out about him, they stopped her from going out of the house and got her engaged to a Mumbai-based Dinesh Shah (name changed).
