Senior councillor in Rajkot Municipal Corporation, Gayatriba Vaghela, has been appointed as the president of Gujarat State Mahila Congress, the party announced on Thursday.

The All India Congress Committee (AICC) said that party president Rahul Gandhi had approved Vaghela’s appointment to the post. She replaces Sonal Patel.

The Gujarat Congress said in a release that Vaghela, who is a lawyer by profession, was elected to Rajkot Municipal Corporation with the highest number of votes for a female councillor. She had also served as leader of Congress party in the Corporation. State Congress president Amit Chavda and other leaders welcomed Vaghela’s appointment and said that it would strengthen the party’s women’s wing.

In another development, Rutvik Makwana, MLA from Chotila constituency, has been appointed as chief organiser of Gujarat Pradesh Seva Dal, the AICC said. Makwana is closely connected with a number of social and educational organisations.
