A class 1 officer of the state fisheries department was, on Monday evening, caught accepting Rs 1 lakh cash as bribe by the Gandhinagar Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB). He has been booked under various provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The ACB, in a statement, said that Mahendra Chaudhary (43), a deputy director with the fisheries department, was a part of the committee that approved fisheries tender, and had already taken a bribe of Rs 4 lakh from the complainant for awarding fisheries contract to him for 10 years. The fisheries department official had demanded Rs 15 lakh annually as bribe from the complainant for awarding him a contract for fishing in Timba village lake. The complainant approached ACB sleuths and filed a complaint against Chaudhary. The ACB laid a trap for the deputy director and caught him taking Rs 1 lakh bribe at a Khetlaapa tea stall near Sargasan crossroads in Gandhinagar.
