While the Shravan month of Hindu calendar is also known for gambling, it proved to be dangerous for 33 persons who were caught gambling on Friday on the outskirts of Gandhinagar. However, three persons, who owned the place and run the den, have fled away. The police have launched a manhunt to nab the operators.

According to the press statement of Gandhinagar district police, a blanket instruction has been given to police staff to stop any kind of gambling activity, which is otherwise a popular customary tradition in Shravan month of Hindu calendar.

As a part of it, the staff of Dabhoda police station on the outskirts of the state capital was on a regular watch. They got a tip-off that a gambling den is being run at a farmhouse in Valad village. A team under the leadership of PSI BR Rathod conducted a raid at the said location.

It turned out to be a regular professional gambling den where gambling was facilitated through plastic tokens. Those arrested for gambling are mostly from areas in and around Gandhinagar. People from Ahmedabad, Surendranagar and Anand were also among those arrested for gambling.

"It was a systematic operation. The owner of the farmhouse has given the place on rent. This was used for gambling on a commercial basis," said Mayur Chavda, District Superintendent of Police (DSP) of Gandhinagar district.

The place belongs to Kalpesh Patel, a resident of Naroda, along with Nilesh Patel and Khushal Patel. The trio managed to flee but police have launched an operation to nab them.

Police have seized cash, 32 cellphones, a number of two-wheelers, a rikshaw, a couple of scooters, Innova car and cash. A total of Rs 10.23 lakh of value including cash has been seized.
