It is not always that the one who showers love on others gets it back. Kanti Devchand Kandoi, 77, and his wife Vasumati have had such an experience, though they do not allow the pain to reflect. They gave away all their assets to their adopted son Ajit, but today this son has drifted so far away that there is no contact between them.
It all started many years ago, when, unable to have their own child, the couple adopted Ajit, the youngest son of Kanti’s brother Sashwat Kandoi. Ajit became their world.
Besides giving him a name in society and good education, the couple fulfilled his needs to ensure he had a comfortable life.
Once Ajit suffered from typhoid, following which he remained unwell very often. The couple spent huge sums on his treatment. When it was time for him to get married, the couple had a grand celebration.
However trouble began then. Soon after Ajit’s marriage, things soured between Vasumati and her daughter-in-law. To let their son live a happy life, they decided to leave the house. Kanti gave away all his assets, including the shop and cash, to Ajit.
The couple then went to Maharashtra carrying just Rs4,000 with them. There they worked for nominal wages. Never once did they hear from Ajit.
The couple went through many difficulties. Kanti even had two heart attacks following which their neighbours advised them to return to their family.
The duo finally did return to Gujarat, but didn’t go to their son or any relative’s place. Kanti got a job at a Jain temple, but the money he got was not enough for them. Through some contact, Kanti and Vasumati got a place at Mattrudham Vrudh Ashram at Kashindra Village.
Today, there is peace in their lives, but the void created by Ajit, the one person who meant the most to them, remains.
