The Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on Sunday arrested a man from Jammu and Kashmir for smuggling heroin from Pakistan via sea. The accused, Nazir Ahmed Thakar, a native of Anantnag in Kashmir, was arrested from Srinagar and brought to Ahmedabad on Monday.

The investigation revealed that Thakar used to smuggle the contrabands from Pakistan to Gujarat, and further supply these to Punjab-based drug dealers. ATS officials also revealed that Thakar was funded by the Kashmir-based terror outfit, Jaish-e-Mohammad in order to smuggle the drugs into Gujarat.

On August 12, the ATS had arrested two men identified as Rafiq Adam Sumra from Mandvi town in Kutch, and Aziz Abdul Bhagad from Salaya town of Dhawrka. They had seized 5 kg heroin worth Rs 14.84 crore from the accused.

The investigation had revealed that Bhagad brought around 300 kg of heroin from Pakistan via sea to Gujarat in the month of March, and it was smuggled twice, out of which a large portion of the contraband was given to Sumra, which also included the 5 kg heroin.

Out of the 300 kg heroin, some of the contraband was handed over to Thakar and his partner Manzur Ahmed Mir in Unjha by Sumra on the instruction of a Punjab-based drug dealer identified as Simranjeet. It was also revealed that Thakar had helped in delivering the contraband thrice to Punjab.

Search for Mir and Simranjeet is underway. It is upon Mir's arrest that officials expect to know to whom the contraband was delivered and how much.
