On February 10, superintendent of Sabarmati Central Jail, RJ Parghi, allegedly held an informal meeting with jailors DG Vankar and DK Parmar, where it was planned to decrease the length of the tunnel. According to investigators, it was decided in the meeting that Parmar would go inside the tunnel with a heavy stone and fix it at an approximate length, probably to decrease the intensity of the crime.

The act of these three officers of the prison department has surprised investigators, mainly due to the unclear motive. They have been forced to search for an answer to the obvious question, ‘What prompted these officials to hide the truth?’

A source familiar with the development told DNA, on condition of anonymity, that the officers might have done this out of fear, to decrease the intensity of the crime committed by the serial blasts’ accused. “The intensity of the crime is different if the length of the tunnel is 42 feet instead of 216 feet,” said the source.
However, the step has come back to the officers like a boomerang and the Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) is set to file a fresh complaint against the trio.

The sleuths, during investigation, had found that the junior jailors informed Parghi about the tunnel and also informed him about the approximate length of the tunnel, which created panic among the jail staff.

DNA could not obtain Parghi’s response as a call and SMS to him remained unanswered.
According to the source, the officers decided to decrease the length of the tunnel and planned to fix an 80-kg stone inside the tunnel with the help of a convict. “This prisoner cannot be considered a culprit, because according to the jail manual, inmates have to follow the instructions given by the jail staff,” said an investigator.

DCB officials are currently taking legal advice on filing a fresh complaint against the three officers. Talking to DNA, a police source, on condition of anonymity, said that the police commissioner had been informed about the intention to file a fresh complaint and it would be done once DCB received approval.
