In a development in the case of fake currency racket busted on Saturday last week, one more arrest was made on Tuesday.
Deepak Patel, a Congress member of Mehsana District Panchayat, was arrested by the officials of Special Operation Group (SOG) based on the statements of two accused in the case. However, Deepak claimed he was being falsely implicated.
It may be recalled that crime branch officials had managed to seize Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) of Rs1 lakh out of a total Rs96 lakh allegedly brought into the state from West Bengal. The rest had entered the market across state by then.
Deputy superintendent of police, SOG, Baldev Solanki said that Deepak has been arrested on the basis of statements recorded by accused arrested earlier.
His name surfaced after the arrested duo Ramesh Patel and Ghanshyam Patel, during interrogation, told the police that they had delivered the FICN of Rs2 lakh to Deepak at Visnagar.
Deepak is a trader based in Vijapur and also a member of the Mehsana District Panchayat from the Congress party. However, police sources said that he claimed that he was being been trapped in the case.
