Authorities at Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology (Cept) have proposed 66% increase in fees for undergraduate courses at the university.

The proposal, which has been discussed with the university’s executive council, hints at an increase in fees from Rs30,000 to Rs50,000 per semester for undergraduate courses. The postgraduate courses will see about 10% hike in fees, said officials. At present, Rs80,000 is charged as fees per semester.

Registrar at Cept University, Anita Hiranandani, said that it (fee hike) is just a proposal and the final decision will be taken by members of the board of management. “The (proposed) hike is mainly due to an increase in expenditure for student infrastructure. Cept is bringing in a lot of changes in teaching and learning methods, apart from initiating renovation of the campus,” said Hiranandani. “We are also considering increasing salaries every year, apart from other expenses.”

If the proposal’s approved, then the fee hike will be applicable from the academic year starting next month. It will be applicable to 80 students taking admission in first year of the faculty of architecture and faculty of planning, and 30 students of faculty of interior design and 60 students of faculty of technology. There are about 1,600 students studying under various heads at Cept University.

Fees for undergraduate courses, last year, were increased from Rs19,500 to Rs30,000.
