AHMEDABAD
Chief minister Narendra Modi Wednesday came down heavily on the Congress-led UPA government saying it lacked the vision to harness skills of the youth.
“Unemployment is a big problem. There is tremendous demand for skilled workers, but there is lack of skilled manpower,” Modi said in his address at the national conference on skill development in Gandhinagar.
The CM said that in 2008, the Centre had formed the Ministers National Centre for Skill Development, which was followed by National Skill Policy in 2009, and a Skill Development Agency later.
“But, in 2013, it disbanded all the committees it formed from 2008-13. The Centre has mastered how to form committees and disband it,” he said.
Officials said that around 5,000 delegates from across the country are taking place in the conference. A number of seminars were also organised as part of the conference.
The CM said that development is bound to happen in places where skilled manpower is adequately available.
“The states that focus on skilled manpower will get more investments,” he said. He also said that the state government had launched several initiatives in this direction.
Citing a Planning Commission report of 2008, he said that in India only 2% of the job seekers get jobs, while in Japan it is 80% and in Britain 68%.
The BJP’s prime ministerial candidate added that Gujarat went ahead to set an example of generating employment that was later adopted by the government for the rest of the country.
