The central government allocated Rs 1,991.5 crore less to Gujarat government for Narmada Yojana against the demands the state had made for the last three years. The center gave grants of Rs 4,699.50 crore against the state government's demand of Rs 6,691 crore for the project during the period of fiscal years of 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19.

The Gujarat government provided the details in answers to a questionnaire that was tabled on Wednesday in the Gujarat assembly. Opposition MLAs had asked different questions to the minister for Narmada Project department and deputy chief minister Nitin Patel, to which, a reply was given in writing. The question, however, could not be discussed in house as the proceedings were adjourned by the speaker after ruckus during the first question.

As per the reply filed by the state government, against the demand of Rs 2,368 crore in 2016-17, only Rs 1,643 crore were approved followed by approval of Rs 2,100 crore against demand of Rs 2,322.30 crore in 2017-18 and Rs 955 crore against a demand of Rs 2,000 crore in 2018-19. The Gujarat government spent Rs 10,757 crore on projects in the last three years, Patel replied.

In reply to another question, the government stated that no construction work remained pending for the main canal network of the project, whereas, 113.28km of work was still pending in branch canals, 237.40km in distributory canals, 1,884.10km in minor canals and 9,219.27km work remained pending in construction of sub-minor canals. This indicates that 8% of the construction work remained pending across the total canal network.

Patel, in his reply, cited the reasons for the incomplete work – the construction remained pending because of work and land acquisition remained incomplete as forest area or else railway lines, roads, network of gas and oil pipelines, communication and power lines, were within the map of the canal. He also said that the tripartite agreements with farmers for sub-minor canals were under progress.

The minister, in another question, replied that a total of Rs 18.15 lakh hectare cultivable area was to be benefited through the irrigation scheme and 9.28 lakh hectare area got irrigation water in Kharif and Rabi seasons in the year 2018-19.
