With the beginning of spring, different communities in city will celebrate Vasant Panchami with special puja of Goddess Saraswati & traditional dishes.

Biharis
The two lakh Biharis of the city will mark the day by playing with gulaal. Also, Saraswati pooja will be organised on Friday, with great fervour. A priest from Satyanarayan temple, Ghatlodia Laxmikant Mishra said, “Students keep a fast on this day and cultural programmes are held in different societies and temples. Also, the devotees stay awake at night singing bhajans and taking part in cultural performances.” He further said that for prasad, items like penjeri, sweet boondi, malpua and kheer are prepared and distributed among devotees.

Oriyas
With traditional Oriya dishes like dalma, tomato chutney and sweets, more than 500 Oriyas of the city will gather on Friday morning to mark Vasant Panchami. The celebration will be held in Naroda with Saraswati Pooja followed by bhajan, havan and ‘bhoji’ (feast) for all. “On this day, school and college going students are also worshipped. In villages of Odisha, we follow a tradition where a coconut is worshipped and during its visarjan (immersion) ceremony, treasure hunt is arranged for the kids by hiding the coconut,” added Vasant Panda, member of Orissa Socio Cultural Association.

Bengalis
With pooja and floral tribute to Goddess Saraswati, the Bengalis of the city will celebrate Vasant Panchami in a grand way on Friday. Interestingly, more than 200 Bengalis will be dressed in yellow to signify the start of spring. The community has also arranged for ‘bhog’ prasad, which involves traditional vegetarian food. “The menu includes a wide array of traditional Bengali dishes like khichdi, labda, beguni pakoda, special chutney and rice kheer,” said Rajib Chakraborty, chief patron of Karnavati Bangiya Parishad. This will be the 13th Vasant Panchami celebration by the parishad.
