The Bharatiya Janata Party won in 47 out of 75 municipalities across Gujarat on Monday. Though the ruling party won the majority of the municipalities, their tally has gone down this year, compared to the 59 civic bodies they won last elections in 2013.
The Congress, on the other hand, gained ground with 16 bodies, as opposed to the six it had won in the last polls. The Nationalist Congress Party got one body. The results were declared by the Gujarat State Election Commission on Monday evening.
While the ruling party contested for 74 municipalities, it won the Jafrabad Municipality uncontested as no polls were held there. As many as eight municipalities went to independent candidates, four bodies did not get a clear mandate, and another four ended in tie votes. Out of the total 2,060 seats in the municipalities, the BJP secured more than 1,167 seats, the Congress got 630 seats, the NCP got 28, BSP got 15, and independent candidates secured another 202, while other parties got 18.
The Congress performed well in the bypolls held for seven seats on Saturday. They won five seats while the BJP won two seats, one in Rajkot Municipal Corporation.
In the recent Assembly elections, the ruling party barely managed to win over 99 seats out of the 182, and the impact was reflected in the polls over semi-urban local government bodies. The party president, however, claimed that voters showed their trust in the BJP again.
"The Congress failed to win 30 bodies falling in constituencies of 41 party MLAs, while 61 per cent of total BJP candidates have won," said BJP President Jitu Vaghani. "This shows that the voters' faith in the BJP has consolidated after the Assembly polls. In PM's hometown of Vadnagar, the BJP won 27 out of 28 seats, while the Congress lost badly in Vallabh Vidyanagar Municipality, which falls in the Congress chief's home district Anand. The Congress is making false claims of having won over 24 bodies, they should match their figures with the official results declared by the SEC."
