An accident near Shilaj brought back the memories of the BMW hit-and-run case in which two bikers were killed by an over-speeding car. A high-speed race between two cars at Rancharda village near Shilaj turned fatal for a biker who was hit by one of the cars. Both the vehicles fled the spot immediately after the accident and could not be traced. The victim has been identified as Himmat Chunara(36), a resident of Nandoli village of Kalol taluka in Gandhinagar.

Chunara, a farmer, was returning home on his bike at 7pm on Wednesday. He was travelling between Rancharda and Pilodia village. At that time, two cars —Verna and Polo— appeared on the scene from the opposite side. Though the road is not wide enough, drivers of both the cars were engaged in a race.

When Chunara was hardly 100 metres away from the approaching four-wheelers, the Polo car driver drove full throttle and tried to go ahead of the Verna car.

But, the Verna car driver didn’t give up and he too hit the accelerator. As a result, both cars drove side by side for some distance, leaving no space for Chunara to ride his bike.

At one point, the Polo car driver lost control over his vehicle. It came on the wrong side of the road and rammed Chunara’s bike. Due to the impact, Chunara was flung high in the air and received critical injuries, an eyewitness told police.

Locals gathered at the spot and rushed Chunara to Sola civil hospital where he was declared brought dead.

The car drivers vanished from the spot immediately after the incident.

Kalol police have lodged a case of accidental death and launched search for the culprits.
