The state government’s initiative in 2000-01 to give away free bicycles to students belonging to SC, ST and OBCs to encourage primary education has ‘back-pedaled’ with the expose certain school authorities scamming away the bicycles under false identities.
Activists claim that school authorities demand bicycles using these applications and later sell them for money.
A certified copy of an application from Matrushri MP Shah School, Naroda proves that a single authority has signed in as a parent of four different students under various names. According to the application, that single authority would be receiving all the four bicycles on behalf of students with the latter having no inkling of the incident.
The issue has come to light following a complaint filed against the school by education activists to the district education office (DEO). Officials from the DEO claim that the issue will be investigated thoroughly in a week’s time and all other schools where the facility of receiving bicycles is applicable will also be questioned for similar fraudulent activities.
According to education activist, Ajay Mishra, the school in Naroda had applied for 30 bicycles, of which it received just 18 cycles. According to school authorities, they lost the form which they had submitted to the social welfare authority demanding the said cycles, leaving them waiting for 12 more bicycles.
Commenting on the certified application from the school, Ahmedabad DEO, RI Patel said, “We have received the complaint and will investigate the issue in a week’s time with other schools that have received bicycles under the scheme as well. Complete documentation of the demand applications and received bicycles will be made available.”
He further said that the social welfare department of state government, which undertakes the initiative, will check the matter in further detail. School authorities were unavailable for comment.
Hence, the social welfare department should be taking care of the issue.
