UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Congress President Rahul Gandhi took part in a prayer meeting and took a tour of 'Gandhi in Ahmedabad' gallery of the Sabarmati Ashram during their visit to the city. The two and a host of top Congress leaders were in Ahmedabad to attend the Congress Working Committee meeting on Tuesday.

Both Sonia and Rahul called the place an inspiration with the latter also congratulating the team at the Ashram for their work.

"It is most inspiring for me to visit this museum...We are inspired by him (Mahatma Gandhi), his life, his sacrifices," Sonia Gandhi wrote.

"A very inspiring place. Thank you for keeping the flame of our leader alive," Rahul wrote in the visitors' book.

The two were also presented with a book 'Gandhi in Ahmedabad' by the Ashram authorities. Rahul also visited the office from where the Gandhi portal is run and sought to know if all the books in the Ashram's possession were searchable from the portal.

The Congress leaders also attended a prayer meeting that saw Gandhi's favourite Bhajan Vaishnav Janato being sung. The leaders also took a tour of the Hriday Kunj.

The party leaders sought to give a symbolic message to the people of the country by remembering the Mahatma and his ideals of non-violence and tolerance.

Tuesday also marks the anniversary of the famous 'Dandi March' started by Mahatma Gandhi from Sabarmati Ashram on March 12, 1930, with a group of Satyagrahis.

Interestingly, the Gandhis did not garland a statue of the Mahatma that is situated in the Ashram. It should be noted that it is almost a ritual for all visiting dignitaries to garland the statue. Authorities at the Ashram said that the party had requested that a prarthana sabha be allowed at the Ashram and so it was held on the grounds.
