Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani on Monday reacted sharply to his Rajasthan counterpart's statement that Gujarat has the maximum consumption of liquor.
Rupani said that Gehlot by his statement had insulted the 6 crore Gujaratis in the state.
"Gehlot should apologise as he has called everyone in the state a drunkard. Gujarat Congress needs to give a clarification regarding the same," said Rupani.
State party president Jitu Vaghani questioned if Gehlot's sweeping statements included his own party workers and leaders in Gujarat too.
Meanwhile, Congress MLA from Morbi, Brijesh Merja said, "The Gujarat government has in the assembly said that Rs254 crore worth of alcohol has been seized in the state in the last two years. This alone shows the availability and consumption of alcohol."
Earlier Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot raised questions on the liquor ban in Gujarat. Gehlot said, "I was in Gujarat for a year. There is a ban on liquor since independence. But Gujarat has the maximum consumption of liquor. This is the situation of Mahatma Gandhi's Gujarat," he said on Sunday.
Dispelling the rumours of a ban on liquor in Rajasthan, Gehlot said that no ban will be imposed on liquor until strict measures can be taken to prevent illegal liquor.
