Gujarat Congress sources said that notices were issued to 43 workers and leaders, including ex-Lunawada MLA Hirabhai Patel, and ex-MLA from Dhanera, Joitabhai Patel, in view of complaints that they had resorted to anti-party activities during elections.

The Congress and its allies won 80 seats in the 182-member House, its best performance in the state since 1990. The party’s tally could have been higher, but many of its candidates lost with small margins. This was attributed to anti-party activities by leaders, who were overlooked for tickets, and their supporters.

After the election results were declared, the Gujarat Congress wrote to its MLAs and local units seeking a report on anti-party activities. This was after Congress president Rahul Gandhi publicly said action would be taken against those who had worked against the party’s interests.
