The civic body of Ahmedabad will now start implementing the guidelines mentioned in the toolkit while collecting garbage from your door. The decision comes ahead of Swachh Survekshan 2019. Sunday onward, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is not going to collect the waste if the dry and wet garbage is not segregated.

For numbers, 65 marks are allotted for practising waste source segregation.

In 2017, The civic body, on June 5, World Environment Day, last year, had decided to collect waste only if was segregated. However, the words fell apart in two months.

There are around 265 residential societies in Ahmedabad that follow the rule, AMC officials said. The rest ignored it because it was not a part of Swachh Survekshan, one of the officials said on condition of anonymity.

To make the rule a norm, the civic body has decided to add the guideline to the Swachh Bharat Mission. Awareness drives were also made to boost the practice. Around 40,000 staff and NGO workers are going to inform citizens about the drive on Sunday.

"Our department will not collect unsegregated waste today onwards. People must segregate the waste before disposing of them. We will collect the sanitary napkins and diapers separately," said Harshad Solanki, director, Solid Waste Management, AMC.

The civic body places separate bins/ cans for the bio-medical waste disposal.

"Other than separate disposal for the sanitary napkins and diapers, we will set up incineration plants in 43 pay-and-use toilets. People can dispose of waste in toilets also. We are in the process of setting up sanitary napkin vending machines, from where the underprivileged can buy a pad for just one rupee," Solanki said.

However, some of the locals are struggling to cope with the drive. "How can I keep two bins separately? There are many issues with the door-to-door collection van. They come only twice a week. First, the civic body needs to be regular in their services," said Rupali Vijh, a resident of Navrangpura.
