Amid the buzz that he is likely to bid adieu to Congress, MLA and prominent OBC leader Alpesh Thakor has been given key responsibilities by the party for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The MLA from Radhanpur has been included in all seven committees for Gujarat Pradesh Congress, as per the list announced by the party on Tuesday.

Thakor has been named as a member of the state Congress coordination committee, and also included in the Pradesh Election Committee for Lok Sabha election. He has been named as convenor of the campaign committee, which would be headed by ex-MLA and former state Congress president Siddharth Patel.

The All India Congress Committee said in a release that the committees were approved by party president Rahul Gandhi.

The first-time MLA is also a part of the publicity committee, member of the media coordination committee, election management committee, and the manifesto committee.

In fact, Thakor is the only person who is a part of all seven committees. Gujarat Congress in-charge Rajeev Satav, state party president Amit Chavda, leader of opposition Paresh Dhanani, RS MP Ahmed Patel, and senior state party leaders such as Bharatsinh Solanki, Arjun Modhwadia, Madhusudan Mistry, and Siddharth Patel are part of only some of the panels.

Many in the Congress feel that the prominence being given to Alpesh Thakor would send the wrong message among the workers.

"There are many committed workers who have been with the party for several years and stuck with it even during tough times. It is unfortunate that people resorting to pressure tactics are being given more importance than loyal workers and leaders," said a Congress leader, requesting anonymity.

Thakor, who has expressed unhappiness with the party's state leadership more than once recently, had sparked off speculations of quitting Congress when he met Chief Minister Vijay Rupani last week. Thakor is believed to be among the 6-7 MLAs the BJP is keen to poach before the LS polls.
