Breaking the yard of Gujarat, warships from across the globe will soon start coming to Alang Ship, Union minister of state for shipping and port Mansukh Mandaviya said in Gandhinagar on Friday.

Mandaviya said Alang would be buzzing with the breaking of warships soon.

"Alang yard will be capable of breaking warships soon as it is developed as green ship recycling yard. The warships in major countries are not broken even after decommissioned as there is no facility anywhere except for few countries. We will make Alang yard equipped very soon and the yard will be that buzzing so as seven to ten years of period also will fall short to complete the task."

Mandaviya, who also belong to Bhavnagar district, said the place started utilising ferrous scrap development fund that will be used to develop infrastructure at the port.

"We allocated Rs215 crore fund last year and will release another Rs300 crore. This will be utilised for the development of facilities at Alang Yard, including breaking of warships. This fund remained unutilised for 20 years, but our government took the issue on priority. The warships going to Korea, Japan or China till today will come to Alang in India and that will create new revenue," Mandaviya added.

The minister, however, accepted that Rs750 crore assistance from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) remained unutilised as no any ship breaker firm applied for.

He also said that the ferrous fund will be utilised to build housing for over ten thousand migrant workers and labourers who work in the ship breaking yard.

"We have developed the infrastructure in Alang and are going to start courses for shipping and ship breaking and related industries at Bhavnagar University. We will also develop the tourism activity at lighthouses where people can visit," Mandaviya further said.

ASSISTANCE

Mansukh Mandaviya said the ship breakers would get assistance from central government for ISO certification, infrastructure and logistics such as flooring, water-sewerage and LPG-CNG connections and tech surveillance.
