Understanding the emotional turmoil that a Type 1 diabetic patient goes through, a 23-year-old girl from city has attempted to bring such people together on a common platform, to share and discuss their stories.

Jazz Sethi, daughter of former world billiards champion Geet Sethi, has started a movement called 'D1iabesties' (Diabesties), that would act as a support system, a lifestyle guide, and a counselor to help such patients and their family members and bust myths that surround the disease.

Inspired by her own journey, Jazz, who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 13, has ventured on a path of raising awareness and debunking myths.

Along with serious medical struggles, she also went through emotional and social turmoils. It was evident that though there was ample medical support available, there was a dearth of social and emotional support.

Sharing her journey, she said, "The biggest struggle for me has been sugar levels shooting to 1000 at times and then dropping to a mere 40. It is emotionally exhausting and a regular affair for us. From styling clothes, while wearing an insulin pump to controlling temptations, it has been a rough ride. Also, often the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes remains unknown. While some people sympathise with us, very few can truly empathise. This is why D1abesties comes into the picture."

D1abesties will be launched on Sunday amid nearly 50 patients and their family. Taking the thought further, she says, "It aims to engage the people of this city in various ways. Their online presence will be marked through fun Youtube videos and a website with informative posts. Since Type 1 Diabetes is diagnosed mostly in young children, we will use popular platforms on the internet to connect with D1abesties in the city. We will also launch quirky and fun merchandise for the community, including fashionable accessories and clothing that will proudly tell their story. Part of the proceeds of the merchandise will be channeled into the D1abesties Foundation that aims at spreading awareness about the condition and the latest developments in technology in a simple and fun way, reducing medical jargon for juveniles. The foundation will also raise funds to support children who cannot afford the medical expenses."
