Ahmedabad to get 100 Nirbhaya vans to ensure safety of women

In an attempt to make the city safer for women, the Ahmedabad police will soon station close to 100 Nirbhaya vans in the city.

The vans, which are enabled with technology, to have CCTV cameras that will provide live recording of the happenings in the surrounding areas to the police control room. It's mainly aimed at preventing crime against women including eve-teasing and chain snatching among others.

Askshayraj Makwana, DCP Zone 5, who is also part of the project said about 100 Nirbhaya vans will be ready soon to be stationed at different locations in the city including malls, colleges, vegetable markets etc. 'The van will have both women police officials as well as counsellors in them to help the women in distress," Makwana said in release.

He further added that the van is also equipped with automatic number plate recording system in case the culprit tries to run and can also detect red-light violations.

The Nirbhaya van will be first given to the SHE Teams of the city police. The SHE Teams have been made at almost all the police station in the city to keep an eye on eve-teasers and others who harass women.

The vans are stationed at places frequently visited by women. Each SHE Team has one woman Police Sub Inspector, four women constables and two male constables. The team deals exclusively with women's complaints and complaints received from the control room among others.

The SHE team of the Sola Police was recently in the news after a fake PSI escaped from their clutches. Eventually, the man was nabbed after some days. The team had almost caught the bogus Police Sub Inspector (PSI) on the road towards Hebatpur.
