The next time a health worker approaches you for the vaccination of your child, think twice before going ahead. S/he may not be aware about the dosage and, in case of an adverse effect, might not know where and whom to contact immediately.

A survey conducted in Ahmedabad revealed that 8.33 per cent of the Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM) workers were not aware of the dosage of the vaccine. Dr Priyank Algotar and Dr Nidhi Talsania conducted the study during 2015 and 2017 while working under the Mission Indradhanush vaccination drive.

“A study was conducted as per the World Health Organization (WHO)’s 30-cluster sampling. Per 5000 people there are only two health workers incharge of the vaccination, as per the state government’s guidelines. However, we have found that many of the workers were not aware about the dosage of the vaccine,” said Dr Algotar.

“Moreover, 8 per cent of the workers were not aware about what to do in case of adverse effects, after the vaccination is given. It means that the in-charges need proper training,” said the researcher.

After studying 60 vaccination sessions, it was found that 5 per cent of these sessions, ANMs were not discarding syringes immediately after use with hub cutter. 10 per cent ANMs were not giving vaccines on the correct nerve, according to National Immunisation Schedule (NIS). It was also found that knowledge about immunisation was inaedequet among the ANMs.

The 5 per cent ANMs failed to answer correct order of vaccines according to NIS. The 8.33 per cent were not able to remember correct doses of vaccines. Further, 13.33 per cent ANMs were unclear about the guidelines to be followed. And, 16.66 per cent ASHAs were not aware about incentives for their work for Mission Indradhanush.
