The health department of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) said on Monday that the city, on an average, recorded 14 cases of swine flu daily. A total of 1,322 positive cases were reported in 2019, it said. Also, 28 people died of the flu in the first three months. This is four years high in the case reporting.

In 2015, the civic body had reported 2131 cases in the first three months. In 2016 there were 152 cases, 2017 witnessed 27 cases for three months, while 2018 had reported 19 cases for the first three months of the year.

The health officials said cases of swine flu rose this year and the cases might increase again during or after the monsoon.

"After analysing the data and looking at the trend of the virus, experts say that cases will rise again during or after the monsoon. This year the cases rose when the temperature was mild," said Dr Bhavin Solanki, in-charge medical officer of health, AMC.

"Now, for the summer season, there will be a drop in the cases. But people need to be cautious while having soft drinks and other beverages, especially during the summer," said Dr Solanki.

The department also mentioned that in March, 695 water-borne diseases were reported. Of the total reported cases, 349 cases were of gastroenteritis, 114 of jaundice and 232 of typhoid.

The official also blamed contaminated water for the rise in cases. "We have identified some areas where a majority of people were affected. We have initiated some remedial measures. We are also constantly monitoring the water quality and distributing chlorine tablets and powder," remarked Dr Solanki.
