Women of Ahmedabad should take a lead in stopping the use of plastic carry bags for daily shopping, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Thursday in the city. He termed plastic as the biggest obstacle in making the country clean.

"When you go for daily shopping for vegetables, you get them in plastic bags. But these bags do not allow water to percolate in the ground. I suggest you use cotton, khadi or jute bags instead. You may look old fashioned, but that should not be a cause of concern. These are long-lasting as well. I appeal to all the women of Gujarat to stop using plastic bags. If you are able to do this, it will herald a great change. I urge women of Ahmedabad to take this initiative," Shah said while delivering a lecture during a function to roll out electric buses in the city.

He gave credit to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for bringing the concept of a 'Plastic-free India' adding that the government of India is seriously considering banning the production of certain kind of plastics.

"From upcoming October 2 (Gandhi Jayanti) onwards, the government is planning to begin a campaign to completely stop the use of 'single-use plastic' and promote recycling and reuse of plastics", the home minister said.

The program also marked the conclusion of 'Mission Million Trees' program of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, in which AMC claims to have enabled planting of over one million saplings starting June 5, World Environment Day.

Apart from AMC, residents of the city, voluntary organisations, schools and colleges, religious organisations and corporates had joined hands in the program.

"I had urged the chairman and secretary of all the residential societies to plant at least five trees this monsoon and I am glad that representatives of 3,216 societies have replied to me saying that they have planted saplings," said Shah.

In addition to 10.87 lakh trees planted in Ahmedabad city, close to 13.7 lakh saplings have been planted in rest of the Ahmedabad district, raising the total number of saplings planted to 24.60 lakh, he claimed.

Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said that planting of trees will go a long way in combating environmental pollution. "People are fed up with pollution. With such initiatives, cities can be made worthy of living. The state government has is also gearing up for a pollution-free Gujarat," said chief minister.
