After a pilot project on smart Anganwadi in Gota ward in 2018, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation is now planning to make 650 Anganwadis smart.

These smart Anganwadis will be equipped with electric gadgets and internet facilities. "There will be augmented reality-based videos for children. Rhymes and so on so forth will be provided for their better cognitive learning," Kuldeep Arya, deputy municipal commissioner and joint CEO, smart city of AMC, said.

"The project will be developed under the smart city plan and we are converting 650 Anganwadis in this phase," added Arya. It is to be noted that there are more than 2,200 Anganwadis in the city, of which only 650 have AMC's own buildings; rest of them are being operated in rented places.

"The programme has been designed for the holistic development of children and to give quality food and education that is at par with private pre-learning schools," Arya said.

The Anganwadi workers will be given smartphones or tablets via which records of each and every enrolled child will be maintained. "Apart from pre-elementary education, we are also providing children with supplementary food and monitoring their overall growth. With the help of records maintained on tablets, the children's individual weight, height, food intake, required vaccination and so on will be later uploaded online," a senior AMC official said.

The children will be taught about traffic signal rules, segregation of waste, and right usage of differently coloured dustbins. There are around 1.97 lakh children, within the age group of 0 to 6 years, who have been enrolled in more than 2,200 Anganwadis in the city. Children between 3 to 6 years of age regularly go to Anganwadi centres.

In 2015, some of the Anganwadis were given tablets to monitor children's growth charts.

WHAT IS AUGMENTED REALITY?

According to the tech website Reality Technologies, Augmented Reality is an enhanced version of reality where live direct or indirect views of the physical environments are augmented with superimposed computer-generated images over a user’s view of the real-world, thus enhancing one’s current perception of reality
