After announcing that it will give a rebate in cases of advance payment of property tax on April 5, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has recovered Rs 78.48 crore in ten days.

Under the scheme, advance taxpayers were to get a discount of up to 12 per cent. Those paying via a physical mode are to get a 10 per cent discount, while those who opt for a digital transaction are to get an additional two per cent benefit.

However, many taxpayers said they have been charged a higher tax than previous years.

"In my tax bill, I have found that I have been charged Rs 450 more as compared to my previous bills," said a taxpayer.

It is to be noted that there has been no hike in tax but citizens have been charged sanitation charges, which have been put under user charges. As per the guidelines of the central government under the Swachh Bharat Mission, there was a provision for introduction for user charge for waste collection and sanitation tax.

The civic body introduced the tax with effect from October 2018. The charges are different for residential and commercial units.

For residential properties, the charge is Rs 1 daily, while for commercial units its is Rs 2. In the current fiscal, the civic body will get more than Rs 100 crore under the user charges. In April 2018, the civic body had earned Rs 314.19 crore. This year, it is set to earn over Rs 350 crore because of the introduction of user charge.
