Ahmedabad: Man held for extortion impersonated cop

Police on Wednesday arrested a 29-year-old man for impersonating a policeman and extorting money from a person in Riverfront area.

Accused Jignesh Sagar, a resident of Danilimda, used to dupe unsuspecting people by posing as a cop and extort money from them. 

As per police officials, a complaint was lodged by victim Raj Trivedi (23) a resident of Meghaninagar. As per the complaint, while returning home from work at around 4.30pm, the Trivedi and his friend had to take shelter under Nehrubridge on Riverfront road from heavy rains. While they were waiting for the rains to stop, an unidentified person approached them on a bike. 

Claiming to be an officer Sardarbridge police station, the man asked them to show their license, RC book and other documents of the vehicle. When the duo produced all documents he asked for, the man asked them to pay a fine of Rs 500 as per the new Motor Vehicle Act for not wearing helmets.

Aware of the fact that the state is yet to implement the new changes in the Motor Vehicles Act, a suspicious Trivedi asked for his identification card. Confirming his suspicion, the man took to his heels.

While returning home from work on Wednesday evening, Trivedi spotted the man near Bhikabhai garden area. With the help of his brother and a few other people, Trivedi caught Sagar and handed over to the police.
