Ahmedabad: Get ready for more showers today

The rain played hide and seek on Tuesday with the city witnessing showers every five hours. While some parts of the city received just a drizzle, others were drenched in heavy rain in the morning and afternoon. Interestingly, a day after temperatures plummeted by seven degree Celsius, Ahmedabad on Tuesday saw the temperature rising to 34.6 degree Celsius. Ahmedabad thus remained the third-hottest district in the state after Deesa (36) and Idar (37.2).

The citizens continued to make the most of the rain by going on long drives and gorging on delicacies. Ashiqui Shah, a graphic designer who found herself caught in the rain while on the way to office, bought some dalwadas. “My colleagues and I had the dalwadas in office over hot cups of coffee. Despite getting drenched, I felt a sense of rejuvenation,” said Shah.

Isha Memon, a student, went on a long drive. “When I returned, it had started to rain and so I had a ‘cutting chai’ on the swing in my home while getting drenched,” said Memon.

On an average, the city received 2 mm of rainfall with the new west zone receiving maximum of 5.3 mm. No rain was reported from the north and east zones of the city.

Meanwhile, the Met department has predicted rain or thundershowers at some places in the city while heavy rain is expected in several districts of South Gujarat, Saurashtra and Kutch. Many parts of Saurashtra region received moderate to heavy rain in the past 24 hours, easing the shortage of drinking water.

On the flip side, traffic on many roads was disrupted and many areas went without power. Power went off in as many as 282 villages on Monday night and could be restored only by Tuesday afternoon, sources from Paschim Gujarat Vij Company Limited (PGVCL) said.

Porbandar received maximum rainfall at 275 mm in the past 24 hours while most of the dams and reservoirs received rain water up to eight feet easing the region’s drinking water problem.

Kutiyana town of Porbandar received 275 mm rainfall followed by Patanvav of Rajkot district (225 mm), Vanthali of Junagadh district 125 mm, Rajkot city 120 mm and Jamnagar 50 mm. (with PTI)
